This March we will celebrate the 20th anniversary of gambling addiction awareness. We are always working to raise awareness about what problem gambling is, but this month is set aside to educate and celebrate our progress in awareness, treatment, and recovery. I’m here.
Why Talk About Problem Gambling?
Gambling disorders affect men and women, young and old, of all backgrounds, ethnicities and lifestyles. People gamble for different reasons and gamble in different ways. Some people gamble for the thrill, others seek escape. Many people gamble socially, while others gamble in isolation. Gambling can affect so many people, so it’s important to talk about what kind of problem gambling is.
What is problem gambling?
Problem gambling is when gambling causes problems in your life. These can range from financial issues, relationship issues, stress and health issues. Everyone is at risk of developing a gambling addiction. There is no discrimination based on age, gender, ethnicity or background. However, there may be some risk factors for developing a gambling addiction.
- Easy access or proximity to gambling opportunities
- Early success (“beginner’s luck”) distorts an individual’s understanding that winning is highly unlikely.
- boredom or loneliness
- Pre-existing mental health problems such as obsessive-compulsive disorder, schizophrenia, depression, and anxiety
- Desperate financial problems solved by ‘big wins’
- Traumatic experiences or abusive upbringings in which gambling distractions serve as an escape route
- Coexisting addictive behaviors, such as drug and alcohol abuse

Overcoming a gambling addiction is not easy, but there are programs that can help. Hundreds of thousands of New Yorkers face gambling problems each year. We encourage you to take advantage of the many resources available to assist the Gambler and her family and friends in their recovery.
